The Biology Transfer Consortium

(BTC)

Established in 1999, the Biology Transfer Consortium (BTC) is a partnership between the UC Berkeley Biology Scholars Program and three selected community colleges - Contra Costa College, City College of San Francisco, and Napa Valley College. The goal of the BTC is to increase the diversity of science through increasing the number of informed students transferring to a four-year college in the sciences.

The BTC includes the following components:

  • Studying the Biological Sciences: A Transfer Seminar
This UC transferable course has been taught every semester for the past 5 years. The course is provided for the BTC partner colleges and targets students from economic, cultural, gender, and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in the sciences. The class, taught by scientists, teaches students the culture of the University and University science through lectures, workshops, tours, and student, faculty, and staff panels.
  • Biology Transfer Consortium Summer Research Fellowship at UC Berkeley
Each summer, Community College students in the BTC have the opportunity to apply for a BTC sponsored fellowship to conduct primary research under a UC Berkeley faculty mentor in the Biological Sciences. The fellowship consists of a summer stipend, as well as, funding for supplies in the laboratory they choose to work in. Participating students also take part in organizing the end of summer symposium where students present their summer research through talks and poster sessions.
  • Steering Committee Meetings
Each month members of the BTC including staff, faculty, and administrators from Contra Costa College, Napa Valley College, and City College of San Francisco meet to discuss various aspects of the coalition including student progress in the course and in research, as well as future directions.
  • Community College Biology Transfer Day
Since 1999, we have sponsored an annual Community College Transfer Day where students from community colleges (e.g., Contra Costa, De Anza, East Los Angeles, Evergreen, Los Angeles Valley, Napa Valley Colleges) attend an all day event at UC Berkeley. Community College students, faculty and staff attend this open-house event to receive a better understanding of the sciences and being a science major at UC Berkeley. The day includes meetings with science faculty, admissions, financial aid and housing speakers along with tours of research laboratories and the entire UC Berkeley campus. The event was created to increase the number of underrepresented minorities transferring to UC Berkeley from Community College.
  • Program On-Site Visits
The BTC sponsors on-site visits for a variety of educational programs across the country. Program members are able to view the various components of the BTC including the meeting of students and the touring of various resources offered by the BTC at UC Berkeley.
  • Pre-Fall Transfer Orientation
Students who have been accepted to UC Berkeley are provided with an orientation sponsored by the BTC and the Coalition for Excellence and Diversity in Math, Science, and Engineering. Students are provided with mentoring from current science students, as well as planning for current courses and careers. New students are also exposed to a variety of science faculty and staff.
