"Through teamwork and cooperation in a non-competitive environment each individual's insight strengthens the education of all. Students, each possessing a distinctive background, have developed into a tight-knit community which serves to propagate the success of every individual. Unified by our common passion for science and love of learning, we support each other at all times while building lifelong connections and friendships. By sharing ideas, thoughts, and memories I am able to contribute my unique perspectives, and in turn benefit from those of others. "Before coming to Cal I wasn't prepared for the academic rigors within the sciences. However, BSP has taught me the necessary study skills to succeed in such an academically competitive campus. BSP has given me a safe environment to learn though networking and discussion instead of through isolation and competition. Whether I have academic concerns or personal issues, the friends and counselors I have met though BSP are always there to support and encourage me. Furthermore, BSP is very special to me because it has given me the opportunity to find a community of people with similar back grounds as my own and who are interested in the science field. To me, BSP is about recognizing and embracing our diverse backgrounds and life experiences and using them to help us address issues within the sciences which may not always be culturally sensitive. "The Biology Scholars Program means belonging to a community that shapes the lives of those who are a part of it. BSP means a lot to me and the program is amazing. Although we came from disadvantaged backgrounds, we now know that it doesn't mean we cannot succeed. We face hardships that the average student at Cal does not face which can affect our performance. Yet, because of all the GOOD PEOPLE in the program who understand and support us in many ways we can demonstrate why we are the BEST STUDENTS at this institution.
