Capture of a migratory butterfly over the Panama Canal

Robert Dudley and colleagues study the ecophysiology of migratory Neotropical butterflies in central Panama. By tracking individual insects with a motorboat, it is possible to measure their airspeeds, wingbeat kinematics, and mechanisms of compensation for wind drift. Subsequent capture via a highspeed boat chase enables morphological measurements and implementation of aerodynamic models to estimate the costs of natural free flight.
