Eugene D. Commins Presidential Chair in Experimental Physics

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to establish the Elizabeth H. and Eugene A. Shurtleff Chair in Undergraduate Education, given in memory of Rose Kerner Shurtleff, to be awarded from time to time to a faculty member at the School, College or Department of the Berkeley campus of the University of California where the need is greatest, at the discretion of the Chancellor.

Esther and Wendy Schekman Chair in Basic Cancer Biology

The Esther and Wendy Schekman Chair in Basic Cancer Biology will honor and support for the work of an eminent faculty member in the Division of Biological Sciences, Dr. Schekman’s preference is that this Chair will be used for recruiting new faculty to Berkeley to advance teaching and research in the field of basic cancer biology, or to retain and honor existing faculty for their work and distinction in this area. It is also Dr.Schekman’s preference that the Chair appointment will be limited to one five-year term.

Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Chair in the Biological Sciences

To support the teaching and research of the chair holder in Biological Sciences.

C.H. Li Distinguished Professorship

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to support a distinguished faculty member in the Biological Sciences Division of the College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Walter and Ruth Schubert Family Chair

To support teaching and research in the general area of bio-chemistry and molecular biology within the dept of MCB.

Coates Family Endowed Chair in Neuroscience

Support a faculty member who is an expert in the field generally referred to as brain chemistry, especially in the area of functional genomics and its applications to elucidating the diversity and function of cells and circuits in the central nervous system. The fund will help further the identification of genes and gene networks important to the normal function of the brain, as well as in the pathology of cells and circuits associate with neurological and psychiatric diseases and disorders.

Virginia G. and Robert E. Gill Chair in Natural History

To record the Gill Chair in Natural History to provide support for professional & research-related expenses such as travel, graduate student support, equipment purchases and innovative teaching projects, as well as fill many other needs that enrich.

Raymond and Beverly Sackler Chair in Computational Biology

An endowment, the payout of which will support the work of an eminent UC Berkeley faculty member whose research interests focus on new approaches and applications of mathematical modeling and computer simulation in the biological sciences. The Chair will be selected by the Chancellor in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Dean of Biological Sciences. Faculty members from all relevant disciplines and departments across the campus are eligible for appointment.

C.H. Li Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Endocrinology

Basic research specifically directed to assist a scientist in his work in chemistry and biology of hormones of pituitary and target organs.

Kirsch Springer Chair in Biological Science

The Fund will be used to provide endowed support for a Chair in the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology with a preference for expertise in biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology, which will be awarded to a full professor in the Division of Biological Sciences in the College of Letters & Sciences.

Ernette Comby Chair in Microbiology

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used for the Ernette Comby Chair in Microbiology in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Flora Lamson Hewlett Chair in Biochemistry

Support the research and learning in biochemistry in the division of biological sciences. The teaching and research of the Hewlett chair holder will involve the use of biochemical approaches to advance biological knowledge. There is a specific preference for a female faculty member to be appointed to this chair whenever possible.

McCreight Chancellor’s Chair in Computational Biology

The McCreight Chancellor’s Chair in Computational Biology Fund (the “Fund”) is an endowed Chancellor Chair to be awarded to a full professor in the computational biology disciplines.

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to support a faculty chair at the University of California, Berkeley. This chair shall rotate among disciplines and departments at the discretion of the Chancellor.

Philip Sandford Boone Chair in Paleontology

An endowment, the payout of which will support the work of an eminent faculty member in the Department of Integrative Biology in the College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley, with a preference that the chairholder be the director of Berkeley?s Museum of Paleontology (UCMP).

Thomas and Stacey Siebel Distinguished Chair in Stem Cell Research

The main purpose of the Siebel Distinguished Chair will be to recruit and retain the world's most distinguished (top 5%) faculty to UC Be'rkeley in the area of stem cell biology, cancer, and related research areas associated with the Siebel Stem Cell Institute. The primary objective of creating the chair is to allow the UC Berkeley Stem Cell Center/Siebel Stem Cell Institute to recruit the most promising faculty into the program.

Marthella Foskett Brown Chair in Biological Sciences

To support the research of a faculty member with a preference for quantitative and systems biology. The chair holder may be a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, The Department of Integrative Biology, or in any relevant department.

Judy Chandler Webb Endowed Chair in the Biological Sciences

To augment the teaching, research, and creative activities of faculty of the highest academic professional caliber, and in doing so bring distinction to the Biological Sciences at UCB.Appointments may be made to new or continuing members of the faculty for terms of three to five years, which may be extended for consecutive terms.

John L. and Margaret B. Gompertz Chair in Integrative Biology

Biology chair fund in support of teaching and research in accordance with University policy.

Li Ka Shing Chancellor's Chair in Biology

The Fund will be used to provide endowed support for a Chair which will be awarded to a tenured professor in Biological Sciences, the "Chancellor's Chair". It is the preference of the donor that the inaugural chairholder be a renowned leader in the field of advanced imaging.

The Fund will also be used to create a new full time faculty position (1.0 FTE) in Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, with a preference for a faculty member with an emphasis in live imaging of cellular processes in development and drug discovery, the "FTE". Initially the FTE will be filled with an assistant professor.

The first $25,000 of the payout distribution will provide a scholarly allowance for the Chair holder. That portion of the remainder that is needed each year to fund the FTE line will be distributed to the faculty salary pool. If, in any year, an undistributed balance remains it will be reinvested to the Fund.

Huber Vossough Chair in Computational Biomedicine

The Fund will be used to provide endowed support for a Chair, which will be awarded to a tenured professor in either the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, or the Division of Biological Sciences, the “Chancellor’s Chair.”Appointments will be made jointly by the Associate Provost for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society and the Dean of Biological Sciences in a collaborative effort.

The Fund will also be used to create a new full time faculty position (1.0 FTE) focused on computational biomedicine, the “FTE.” The FTE will be a joint position (50/50) in the Division of Biological Sciences and the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society, with the home unit or department to be determined after the selection of the finalist.

The Divisions intend to create a mentoring relationship between the Chancellor’s Chair and the new full time faculty position.

Li Ka Shing Chancellor’s Chair in Biomedical and Health Sciences

An endowment, the payout of which will support the work of an eminent faculty member affiliated with the Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. A Chancellor?s Chair is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a tenured faculty member and is reserved for faculty who have made extraordinary contributions in their field. As it is funded at the highest endowment level, it provides a mechanism for recruiting and retaining truly world-class scholars. This chair will serve to fortify teaching and research that is making strides toward addressing some of the most pressing global health challenges. The donor?s preference is that the chair be awarded initially to a faculty member who is engaged in cutting edge research in genomic engineering. Subsequent chairholders should be faculty who are leading important campus initiatives that build UC Berkeley?s preeminence in health sciences. The selection of the chairholder is made by the Chancellor in consultation with appropriate deans and faculty leaders affiliated with the Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Frances H. Williams Chair in Biological Sciences

Income to provide a chair in the Biological Sciences, including but not limited to, expenditures for teaching & research materials, books & manuscripts, clerical support and support for graduate students & research assistants.

Dr. K. Peter Hirth Endowed Chair in Cancer Research

An endowment, the payout of which will be used to support faculty with a focus on cancer research at the University of California, Berkeley. The Chair will support the research and teaching of an eminent faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (?MCB?) in the College of Letters & Science. The Chair holder will be selected on the recommendation of the Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences, after consultation with the Chairperson of MCB. The appointee will be a faculty member of recognized distinction and accomplishment in the biological sciences who is engaged in work that is notably innovative and holds the promise of advancing the biological sciences and cancer research in new and promising directions.

The endowed chair will support a faculty member who is an expert in the area of molecular neuroscience, and will serve to further understanding of brain function & neural disease.

C.H. and Annie Li Chair in Molecular Biology of Diseases

To support a distinguished faculty member whose area of scholarship is the molecular biology of diseases in the Div of Biological Sciences, College of L&S.

Class of 1936 Chair

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to support the Class of 1936 Second Chair in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. The chair will be used to recruit and retain outstanding faculty at the College of Letters and Science, and awarded to faculty members with outstanding accomplishments and abilities.

Edward E. Penhoet Distinguished Endowed Chair in Global Health and Infectious Disease

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to support the work of an eminent faculty member in the School of Public Health or in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology in the College of Letters & Sciences, or a faculty member who has joint appointment in both departments. This multidisciplinary chair will serve to fortify teaching and research on campus that is making strides toward addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing human health.

Michael Chamberlin and Caroline Kane Directorship for the Biology Scholars Program

An endowment, the payout of which will be used in support of The Biology Scholars Program in the College of Letters and Science. The endowment will provide funds to be used at the discretion of the Faculty Director of the Biology Scholars Program for work and services that may include program innovation, education and outreach, advocacy locally and in STEM fields, community-building, student support e.g. stipends, and supplementary program staffing support. The funds may also be used to partially support a Deputy Director under the supervision of current Director Dr. John Matsui.

Luis Alvarez Memorial Chair in Experimental Physics

An endowment, the payout of which shall be used to support a faculty member in the Department of Physics in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley. The chair holder may hold a simultaneous scientific appointment at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The chair holder will be an exceptional experimentalist, chosen for his or her capability to carry on in the tradition of ingenious and broad interdisciplinary research exemplified by Luis Alvarez.

John D. MacArthur Chair

To support an endowed chair in the biological sciences with the academic unit to be determined by the Chancellor and or of reassignment of income to be considered by the president upon death, retirement, or resignation of the first incumbent.
